1981: Leading the Toronto Maple Leafs 1-0 after the first period, the Buffalo Sabres bust out for nine goals in the second period. Center Gil Perreault leads the onslaught with a hat trick as the Sabres set an NHL record for most goals in a period. Toronto netminder Michel Larocque, who had recently been obtained from Montreal, yields all nine goals.
The Leafs score three goals in the period as the teams set a record of 12 goals in one period.
The Sabres score four more goals in the third period and skate to a 14-4 rout in Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo. Andre Savard gets the final goal to complete his hat trick and finishes the game with six points. “A great, beautiful night,” Savard says.
